Floating cities as an innovative response to climate change | DW Documentary
Sea levels are rising due to climate change. Many coastal cities are at growing risk of flooding. Architects are trying to react to this development with new ideas, such as floating cities. But this concept is not without its problems.
Architect Koen Olthuis is constructing a floating city in the Maldives, sustainably cooled with sea water. In the Netherlands, Sacha and Jan live in a waterborne section of the Steigereiland neighborhood. It's based on a complicated feat of engineering - but also depends on cooperation and solidarity. If one home is too heavy, it raises the one next door. Yet Sacha and Jan like its collaborative nature. The residents of the floating neighborhood all love living by the water, not far from the heart of Amsterdam.
In Germany, a University of Kiel project goes...

Construction of the world's first floating city in Korea
The Earth's sea level is constantly increasing. A real flood may soon begin, because since 1880 the world’s ocean waters have risen an average of eight to nine inches. And a third of that figure, according to Climate.Gov climate change research portal, is made up of indicators over the past 25 years!
The sea level directly depends on melting glaciers due to global warming.
An increase in the planet temperature warms the oceans, so the water volume also increases. Pumping of groundwater and sewage into the seas as a result of human activity also has a strong impact. The situation will only worsen in the future. According to NOAA estimates, US water level will increase an average of another 10-12 inches by 2050. For some small islands and lowland coasts, a rise in the sea level poses an exis...

Triton City, envisioned by Buckminster Fuller in the 1960s, was an early concept of a self-sustaining floating city with advanced technologies for food production, water purification, and renewable energy. The project's ambition was to create a scalable community that could expand as needed. However, it faced setbacks due to the death of its main investor, Matsutaro Shoriki, bureaucratic obstacles, and the unavailability of required technologies at the time. The Maldives Floating City, inspired by Dutch floating homes, offers a more practical approach with modular units. Despite these advancements, the long-term sustainability and viability of floating cities in the face of rising sea levels and other challenges remain uncertain.

In Germany, a University of Kiel project goes even further. Biologist Martina Mühl is researching the possibility of implementing aquaculture very close to home, so residents can tap their own fresh local supply of fish and seafood.
Hamburg and Bremen have been responding to rising tides by constructing ever higher levees. But soon even this will no longer be enough to cope with the growing impact of climate change. This documentary shows possible alternatives to levees and how we might be able to cope with the rising sea levels in the future.

For some small islands and lowland coasts, a rise in the sea level poses an existential threat.
According to experts, the consequences will initially be felt by small island states. Soon Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Hawaii, Maldives may be flooded.
Floods will scare away tourists, who are an important source of income for local residents.
